These songs were recorded in the Fall of 2014 at the 115 N Dodge St house in Iowa City. It's one of the most creative houses Ive ever lived in, save for the Pop Dungeon in Memphis, TN. The small Dodge St house was home to Shawn Reed, Tim Wehrle, and many others who left some wild hoodoo between the walls. That inspirado is all over these songs.
I also fell under the spell of what I came to understand as a capitalistic love during this time. I soon realized that love is not a capitalist idea and abandoned the philosophy altogether. One cannot expect love to yield a profit. In fact, it is both fulfilling and liberating to reject the myth that you need a return on your investment. I fell in love and fell out of love, I learned how far out I could really take myself on a cosmic, emotional level, and I reconnected with some of the most amazing and talented people Ive ever known.
Experimenting with these songs (I wouldn't say I wrote them because they just evolved, and continue to do so) was a return to form after many years of nil production and unbearable sadness and self-loathing. The result of these recordings, especially The Palisades, humbly reminded me that I am capable of feeling good, feeling pain or feeling anything at all. After forgetting that I was a whole person and living like a ghost, these songs proved to me that there is joy and wonder in the world. Hope you dig them the most.
